English - Hummingbird.
For English this half term we will be introducing a new text to the class called Hummingbird written by Nicola Davies. While we explore the illustrations and text in the book and the children will work on skills including inference and prediction. We will use this text to support us as we develop our writing skills across a range of genres. The children will work on their skills including punctuation, sentence structure and grammar throughout the half term. They will develop their use of expanded noun phrases, conjunctions and a variety of sentence openers to give more detail in their writing. In guided reading, the children will be exposed to increasingly more challenging texts where they will be applying VIPERS skills to develop their reading ability.

Topic - Light up the world!
Light Up The World is a thematic unit based around the sun and other sources of light, with a science focus. We will look at solar power and how to save electricity, as well as learning about sun safety and the importance of protecting both the skin and eyes. Finally we will learn about how shadows are formed, making our own with different shapes.

Maths
This half term we will continue to develop our knowledge of 2D shapes and become more familiar with the properties of 3D shapes. Following this we will recap how to measure mass, capacity and volume, using a range of equipment to help us as well as developing our understanding of statistics. We will continue to work on our reasoning and problem solving skills, whilst ensuring that we revisit number and calculation skills in warm ups.
