Phonics at Grangehurst
At Grangehurst, we use a synthetic phonics programme called ‘Monster Phonics’.
Monster Phonics is an enhanced systematic synthetic phonics scheme. It teaches phonics in a comprehensive structured progression, but provides additional multi-sensory support to make learning more memorable and engaging.
As part of this, children have daily phonics sessions where they participate in speaking, listening and spelling activities that are matched to their developing needs.
Children work through the different phases, learning and developing their knowledge of sounds and applying them to appropriately pitched reading books. Children are sent home with a reading book that is linked to the phonics phase that they are working on in class. Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 follow the Monster Phonics programme and in Year 1 this is supplemented by daily supported reading sessions, where children begin to develop their skills of comprehension and fluency, ready for Year 2 where they participate in whole class reading sessions.
